Trips & Hosts for the Lace Guild

Trips

1985

21st – 24th February 1985, the Norfolk Lacemakers made their first trip abroad to Bruges. A number of trips have since been arranged for both in the UK & abroad.

2002

Sixteen members visited The Fan Museum in Greenwich, and were given a fascinating talk and commentary of the fans in the current exhibition of Royal Fans by Mrs Helen Alexander (founder and curator of the museum).  Several members then had lunch, which was served in the Orangery, a beautiful surrounding for an excellent meal.  Five members then attempted the fan-making course, during which they made two folding fans, while the other members took in the sights and pleasures of Greenwich.

2003

Again sixteen members travelled by mini bus to Luton Museum, situated in the Wardown Park.  They were given an introductory talk and then allowed to view and handle (in gloves of course) the study collection of various laces and patterns.  They had a lunch at Stockwood Craft Museum and Gardens, and then viewed the displays there.

2004

Ten members travelled to the Cecil Higgins Museum at Bedford. The Thomas Lester lace collection of 19th century Bedfordshire/Maltese lace is held at the museum.  The members spent two hours viewing the lace and patterns from that period.  Most members had a packed lunch in the garden, and spent the rest of the day looking round the Victorian mansion, depicting various rooms of a well-to-do Victorian family.  Among the permanent exhibitions were displays of bobbins and the history of lace making for the area of Bedfordshire.
