Suffolk Lace:-Nicky Höwener-Townsend .

Biography - Nicky Höwener-Townsend

I was first introduced to lacemaking some 25 years ago by a fellow textile enthusiast and was hooked from the outset. My teaching career began when I established a regular lace making class for the children at my local school, which I taught for 12 years. During this time, having gained various qualifications, doors opened to teaching regular lacemaking classes to adults at the local College. Today these classes are now run privately.

Life took an interesting turn when I discovered, contrary to popular belief, that Suffolk had indeed once had its own lace industry. Nine years of research subsequently resulted in the publication of ‘Suffolk Lace and the Lacemakers of Eye’ in 2009. This has again led to new ventures with exhibitions in the UK and Denmark, as well as opportunities to give talks and revive Suffolk’s Point Ground patterns by teaching workshops centred on them in both the UK and America.
